[Dear Pap,]

I now sit down to write you a few lines to let you know that I received the shirts and socks that you sent me yesterday. I got two letters from you several days ago — one with a receipt for the shirts at the Express Office.

Frank Hawkins got back yesterday.

The rebels are in force at Murfreesboro. Their pickets are only six miles from Nashville on the Murfreesboro Pike. We are on the Franklin Pike. There is no rebs on this pike. The rebs captured 60 wagons on the Murfreesboro Pike the other day. We sent out a forage train with only one regiment with it and they were attacked by a lot of cavalry and run away and left the train.

I haven’t heard from mother since I heard from you. Hawkins is going away with the mail so I will have to close. Your affectionate son, — J. L. Hebron
